"The Velvet Underground" explora los diferentes hilos que convergieron para que surgiera una de las bandas más influyentes del rock. El grupo fue artífice de un nuevo sonido que en cierto modo cambió el mundo de la música, cimentando así su fama como una de las bandas de rock & roll más veneradas de la historia, y muestra cómo el grupo se convirtió en una piedra de toque cultural con una serie de contradicciones: son de su tiempo y atemporales; literarios y anclados en la realidad; tienen raíces en la alta cultura y en el arte urbano. El film contiene entrevistas con figuras clave de la época, combinadas con una plétora de actuaciones nunca antes vistas, incluyendo grabaciones de Andy Warhol. Todo ello crea un viaje inmersivo a lo que el miembro fundador de la banda John Cale describe como la ética del grupo: “cómo ser elegante y brutal al mismo tiempo”.
